8 Crazy Nights of Wine, Night 2: Herzog Reserve Alexander Valley Cab Sauvignon & Carmel Vintage

We hope everyone had an excellent first night of Chanukah! Our competition for 2 tickets to New York's Kosher Food & Wine Experience is in full swing. Luckily, there are seven more days to enter, so you still have plenty of time to participate.

Last night we sampled semi-dry whites to go with latkes, gelt, and tons of family enthusiasm. Tonight, we're changing our tune a little with a quiet night and wines with more subtle, rounded flavors.

For our meal, we'll be sipping Herzog Special Reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine, awarded 90 points by Wine Enthusiast, has deep, warm flavors. Notes of plum and cedar, soft tannins, and a lingering finish make this more appropriate for an adult meal rather than a frenzied family affair.

For dessert, we'll be sampling Carmel Vintage. This Petit Sirah-based wine has a full-bodied complexity similar to the Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. And it's had plenty of time to mature: 18 months in small, French oak barrels to be precise.

We recommend these wines with fish and suganiyot, or traditional Chanukah donuts. Are you preparing a new meal, or serving leftovers from last night?

Food, we mean. We're sure the wine is all gone.
